The Biostatistics Core accelerates successful HIV/AIDS research by provision of biostatistical support and by arranging mutually beneficial collaborations between CFAR researchers and statistical scientists.
HIV/STD Laboratory Core
The HIV/STD Laboratory Core (formerly VIM Core) provides users with state-of-the-art HIV & STD testing in CAP/CLIA laboratories, laboratory support, and facilitating AIDS research among CFAR investigators.
Social and Behavioral Science Core
The Social and Behavioral Science Research Core seeks to facilitate and support new collaborative HIV-related research that is interdisciplinary and inter-institutional.
Clinical Core
The Clinical Core leads the UNC CFAR Clinical Cohort (UCHCC), a resource for addressing pressing clinical care issues facing patients with HIV. The UCHCC has grown to include over 4,000 HIV-infected patients, with a rich specimen repository, patient reported outcomes and a comprehensive social, demographic and behavioral survey. The UCHCC has been linked with local, state and national data sources, including those available through the US Census Bureau and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare. Clinical Pharmacology and Analytical Chemistry Core
The Clinical Pharmacology Core has recently installed a novel analytical instrument for mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of biological matrices based on infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization (IR-MALDESI). Using this approach, the biodistribution of antiretroviral drugs and other novel therapies can be quantified simultaneously within tissue. By combining the resulting maps of analyte distribution with serial images of tissue morphology and immunohistochemistry, drug penetration to sites of action and therapeutic efficacy can be evaluated.
Developmental Core
The CFAR Developmental Core welcomes Dr. Kate MacQueen as the new Core Director. Kate is a Senior Scientist in the Social and Behavioral Health Sciences Division of FHI 360. She joined FHI 360 in 2001 and before that worked at the CDC. Kate has appointments as Adjunct Associate Professor in the SOM Department of Social Medicine and in the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Health Behavior Program.
Administrative Core
The Administrative Core supports and promotes the entire range of basic, clinical, prevention, social, behavioral, and translational HIV research activities throughout the UNC CFAR.
